Over the past few weeks, we have been monitoring the spread of COVID-19 and closely following the situation and adjusting as recommended by local governments. That means Wizards of the Coast is working from home as we continue to craft new D&D stories and supplements for our fans. Some D&D streaming programming will be disrupted during this time, including introductions of new series, but we’re working hard on that front to provide as much entertainment as possible.

We believe the social connection playing games, including D&D, can continue to be helpful for those of us who feel isolated or alone in our homes in order to stay safe from transmission. As social distancing impacts our ability to get together in person, we wanted to offer the following resources and advice for more remote play—many of which are free.

On behalf of the D&D Team, we want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take all necessary precautions. Please take care, and hang in there everyone.

Tips & Tricks

To help support fans playing D&D digitally, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks for safely enjoying D&D with others without breaking out your 10-foot poles.

Basic Rules

The Basic Rules for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons are available for free!

  • Download the free 180-page PDF which includes information on how to create a character, how to play the game, 120 spell descriptions, and tips for Dungeon Masters.
  • Everything you need to start playing Dungeons & Dragons can be found here!

Virtual Spaces

Taverns can take on many forms. While it may not be advisable to meet in an actual tavern, you can still gather your party before venturing forth.

  • Utilize virtual tabletop platforms like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds if you prefer using battle maps and minis. You can even find new groups to adventure with online!
  • Manage your campaign virtually using D&D Beyond.
  • D&D Adventurer’s League content can be played and logged from the comfort of your own home. Learn more about how to organize an official Adventurer’s League game here.
  • If you don’t require a battle map and minis to play, programs like Skype, Zoom, and Discord are great for both voice and video chat and free to download.

Dice

No dice? No problem! If you find yourself dice-less you can still roll a natural 20.

  • We have resurrected an ancient and arcane dice roller for all your digital dice rolling needs.
  • As James Wyatt discovered a few years ago, virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa can roll a d4, d6, d8, d10, d20, or d100. Just ask!
  • Consider the DIY route and create your own paper chits by numbering cardstock pieces and drawing from a hat or bowl to simulate rolling. You’ll be playing D&D like folks in 1977!

Support content creators

  • Many content creators in the community may be impacted by the current situation. Check out their work on the Dungeon Master’s Guild and consider tossing a few coins their way if you are able.
  • You can also support the online streaming community by watching other adventures. Check out the Dungeons & Dragons category on Twitch and find a new group to watch.

These are just a few ways to enjoy Dungeons & Dragons with your friends and loved ones. Let us know what other solutions you find so we can share them with the wider community!

About the Guest:

Maude Garrett

Maude Garrett is the creator of Geek Bomb and Fungeons & Flagons (a D&D inspired improv show with drinking!). She has been playing D&D since 2012. She serves as the “Mauderator”, currently playing the high elf ranger “Lyra”.

How to DM Guest:

Noah Grand

Noah Grand (he/they) is a social scientist and statistician by day, best-selling D&D adventure and supplement writer and editor by night. They are currently the lead event organizer for Adventurers League play at several online events throughout 2020

You can find their work at DMsGuild and on Twitter @noahgrand

Your Podcast Hosts

Greg Tito

Greg Tito has had weird and long career as an Off Broadway stage manager, a playwright, a theater carpenter, a secretary, an RPG designer, a games journalist, and now a PR/Marketing person. He has loved Dungeons & Dragons ever since 1985 when he found an old copy of the AD&D Dungeon Master’s Guide on his brother’s bookshelf and he honed that love of fantasy storytelling in the dark streets of Sasserine by way of the Upper West Side gaming group he joined in 2004. He moved his family (wife + two young kids) to Seattle in 2015 to work on D&D and he’s never looked back.

Shelly Mazzanoble

Shelly Mazzanoble will always play a magic-user. There. She said it. Enough pretending to want to break out of her comfort zone. She’s a magic-user. She’s also the brand lead for Avalon Hill and loves talking about that one time she played Diplomacy and SOMEONE (okay, it was Ben Petrisor) stabbed her in the back and took over her beloved Russia. If you enjoy tales of sorcery, board game upheavals, and reasons her 3 year-old is crying (HINT: She tried to make him eat a Nutella crepe), find Shelly on Twitter and Facebook.

We believe the social connection playing games, including D&D, can continue to be helpful for those of us who feel isolated or alone in our homes in order to stay safe from transmission. If you are in need of fun & educational material to share and/or play with your kids, you can check back here for D&D materials to help during this time. And if you (or someone you know) is a younger gamer, we’re also releasing resources to make it even easier to get into D&D.

Dungeons & Dragons provides a unique opportunity to adventure with friends without leaving your front door. Help celebrate that spirit of togetherness this year at D&D Live 2020: Roll w/ Advantage.

We’re bringing D&D’s brightest stars to this virtual table to preview the latest D&D storyline with live gaming sessions, all while raising money for Red Nose Day to help children affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Watch live as big personalities play elves, wizards, and fighters and embark on epic quests!

  • Funny people like Thomas Middleditch, Brian Posehn, and Kevin Sussman will work together to solve problems or, more likely, cause some hilarious new ones.
  • WWE Superstars Alexa Bliss, Tyler Breeze, Dio Maddin, Ember Moon, and Xavier Woods will contend with the beefcake destroyer Jeremy Crawford, a.k.a. Principal Rules Designer for D&D.
  • Deborah Ann Woll will lead a group of actors—including Amy Acker, Janina Gavinkar, and Matthew Lillard, and Sam Richardson—in improvising a way to help people in a fantasy world not that different from ours.
  • And principal D&D writer Chris Perkins takes players new to D&D—including Felicia Day, Brett Gelman, David Harbour, Brandon Routh, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Martin Starr—through adventures sure to de-mystify the hobby for all who tune in.

Look for the following live play games, announcements, and panels taking place throughout the event! Tune in to YouTube and Twitch to watch the latest D&D storyline come to life.

Watch D&D Live 2020 at Home

As social distancing impacts our ability to get together in person, we wanted to offer opportunities and resources for remote participation via our D&D Live Event Portal. The virtual side of D&D Live 2020 allows anyone to take part during the event from their own home. So gather your party together online for a long weekend of excitement, news, and play!

Fans of D&D will learn all about the new storyline as well as accompanying new products—plus, by donating a small amount to Red Nose Day (of $10 or more), fans will be able to register through the D&D Live Event Portal. Once registered, fans will gain access to advance registration for future D&D sessions (when available), with D&D Adventurers League offering four new short adventures everyone can enjoy. Fans will also be able to choose the character best suited to help the region through Reality RP, a mashup of fantasy storytelling, community engagement, and reality television!

Event Apparel

As part of D&D Live 2020, we've partnered with Red Nose Day to create event apparel and a special adventure—with all funds raised going directly to the Red Nose Day Fund/Comic Relief US.

We believe sparking change for good can—and should—be fun! Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast will donate net profits from the sale of this apparel to Red Nose Day, a fundraising campaign on a mission to keep children in the US and all around the world safe, healthy, and educated. Red Nose Day uses the power of entertainment to drive positive change and wants everyone to feel empowered to give back, even if it’s through buying a t-shirt or a hoodie. These small but meaningful acts add up to a big difference for those children who need it the most.

Red Nose Day supports programs that address both the immediate needs of children in poverty while fostering long-term change. Funds raised are split 50/50 between the United States and some of the poorest communities around the world. Red Nose Day ensures your donations go where the need is the greatest. Food. Medicine. Shelter. And most importantly, to give hope.

To date, Red Nose Day donations have positively impacted over 25 million children living in poverty to help change their stories for good. We hope you can help join us in supporting the cause!

Special Adventure

As added support for Red Nose Day, we've created the following adventure—available now via the DMs Guild—with all Wizards of the Coast proceeds going directly to the Red Nose Day Fund/Comic Relief US.

Return to the Glory is an adventure designed for orc characters, levels 6-8. Your people once dominated everything south of the mountains; you had the greatest, most advanced underground stronghold ever known to orc-kind. Then the cataclysm happened. Centuries have passed, and only a few tribes have survived and assembled under the banner of one cause. Reclaim what was once yours!

Red Nose Day in the United States is a program of Comic Relief US, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Feel the cold touch of death in this adventure for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.

In Icewind Dale, adventure is a dish best served cold.

Beneath the unyielding night sky, you stand before a towering glacier and recite an ancient rhyme, causing a crack to form in the great wall of ice. Beyond this yawning fissure, the Caves of Hunger await. And past this icy dungeon is a secret so old and terrifying that few dare speak of it. The mad wizards of the Arcane Brotherhood long to possess that which the god of winter’s wrath has so coldly preserved—as do you! What fantastic secrets and treasures are entombed in the sunless heart of the glacier, and what will their discovery mean for the denizens of Icewind Dale? Can you save Ten-Towns from the Frostmaiden’s everlasting night?

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is a tale of dark terror that revisits the forlorn, flickering candlelights of civilization known as Ten-Towns and sheds light on the many bone-chilling locations that surround these frontier settlements.

Diversity and Dungeons & Dragons

Text:

Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is strength, for only a diverse group of adventurers can overcome the many challenges a D&D story presents. In that spirit, making D&D as welcoming and inclusive as possible has moved to the forefront of our priorities over the last six years. We’d like to share with you what we’ve been doing, and what we plan to do in the future to address legacy D&D content that does not reflect who we are today. We recognize that doing this isn’t about getting to a place where we can rest on our laurels but continuing to head in the right direction. We feel that being transparent about it is the best way to let our community help us to continue to calibrate our efforts.

One of the explicit design goals of 5th edition D&D is to depict humanity in all its beautiful diversity by depicting characters who represent an array of ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and beliefs. We want everyone to feel at home around the game table and to see positive reflections of themselves within our products. “Human” in D&D means everyone, not just fantasy versions of northern Europeans, and the D&D community is now more diverse than it’s ever been.

Throughout the 50-year history of D&D, some of the peoples in the game—orcs and drow being two of the prime examples—have been characterized as monstrous and evil, using descriptions that are painfully reminiscent of how real-world ethnic groups have been and continue to be denigrated. That’s just not right, and it’s not something we believe in. Despite our conscious efforts to the contrary, we have allowed some of those old descriptions to reappear in the game. We recognize that to live our values, we have to do an even better job in handling these issues. If we make mistakes, our priority is to make things right.

Here’s what we’re doing to improve:

  • We present orcs and drow in a new light in two of our most recent books, Eberron: Rising from the Last War and Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. In those books, orcs and drow are just as morally and culturally complex as other peoples. We will continue that approach in future books, portraying all the peoples of D&D in relatable ways and making it clear that they are as free as humans to decide who they are and what they do.

  • When every D&D book is reprinted, we have an opportunity to correct errors that we or the broader D&D community discovered in that book. Each year, we use those opportunities to fix a variety of things, including errors in judgment. In recent reprintings of Tomb of Annihilation and Curse of Strahd, for example, we changed text that was racially insensitive. Those reprints have already been printed and will be available in the months ahead. We will continue this process, reviewing each book as it comes up for a reprint and fixing such errors where they are present.

  • Later this year, we will release a product (not yet announced) that offers a way for a player to customize their character’s origin, including the option to change the ability score increases that come from being an elf, a dwarf, or one of D&D's many other playable folk. This option emphasizes that each person in the game is an individual with capabilities all their own.

  • Curse of Strahd included a people known as the Vistani and featured the Vistani heroine Ezmerelda. Regrettably, their depiction echoes some stereotypes associated with the Romani people in the real world. To rectify that, we’ve not only made changes to Curse of Strahd, but in two upcoming books, we will also show—working with a Romani consultant—the Vistani in a way that doesn’t rely on reductive tropes.

  • We've received valuable insights from sensitivity readers on two of our recent books. We are incorporating sensitivity readers into our creative process, and we will continue to reach out to experts in various fields to help us identify our blind spots.

  • We're proactively seeking new, diverse talent to join our staff and our pool of freelance writers and artists. We’ve brought in contributors who reflect the beautiful diversity of the D&D community to work on books coming out in 2021. We're going to invest even more in this approach and add a broad range of new voices to join the chorus of D&D storytelling.

And we will continue to listen to you all. We created 5th edition in conversation with the D&D community. It's a conversation that continues to this day. That's at the heart of our work—listening to the community, learning what brings you joy, and doing everything we can to provide it in every one of our books.

This part of our work will never end. We know that every day someone finds the courage to voice their truth, and we’re here to listen. We are eternally grateful for the ongoing dialog with the D&D community, and we look forward to continuing to improve D&D for generations to come.
